Two Trades the Dallas Mavericks Could Make in Draft
By Kohl Rast
Dallas, Memphis, and Denver Strike a Deal
Dallas gets: #4 Pick, Chandler Parsons, Ben McLemore, Mason Plumlee
Memphis gets: Harrison Barnes, Wilson Chandler, protected Mavs 2019 pick, Nuggets 2nd Round pick (#58)
Denver gets: Wesley Matthews, JaMychal Green, Mavs 2nd Round pick (#33)
This trade would be contingent on a couple things from Memphis and Denver. Each team is in a different situation but both have high hopes for the near future. To look back at the results from this year, Denver went 46-36 and missed out on the playoffs by only one game, losing to Minnesota in the final game of the season for a win-or-go-home situation.
There biggest concern appears to be that they have two shooting guards starting without a bonafide point guard. Wilson Chandler is also a concern going forward as he has not proven that he can be a quality starting small forward in the league. The Paul Millsap/Nikola Jokic pairing is interesting as well.
The Grizzlies on the other hand, tanked hard this season, finishing with the 2nd worst record at 22-60. Although that looks bad, the team is only one year removed from a playoff appearance with the same core talent of Mike Conley and Marc Gasol.
This trade would rely on the idea that both of these teams realize they aren’t far from competing again. The Grizzlies would be giving up a top 4 pick in a solid draft, but they would be receiving a 3rd scorer to help Conley and Gasol, a nice bench piece or stretch 4 option, and a future first round pick. The biggest thing they receive is relief from the terrible Parsons contract.
The Nuggets, on the other hand, would be receiving a great defensive wing that can start alongside Harris and Murray, as well as nice depth in the front court. They also get off the Plumlee and Chandler contracts which will give them some relief.
The Mavs get two of the top 5 picks in this year’s draft. With a chance to pair Dennis Smith Jr. with Bagley/Bamba/Jackson and Porter/Bridges/Young, the stage is set for a very young team that can grow together. Dallas will have some ugly contracts on the book for a couple years but, by the time they are cleared, it’ll really be time to compete again.
