With Yogi Ferrell set to hit restricted free agency, here are four landing spots for him this summer.
In 2017, Ferrell was a mid-season call up from the G-League on a 10 day contract.
This past season, he played in all 82 games, averaged double-digit points and over 27 minutes a game. It is safe to say he played an integral piece to the puzzle.
Now, the 24-year-old Yogi Ferrell is set to hit restricted free agency where he has a qualifying offer for $1.6 million. If Dallas decides to chase bigger free agents, it could come at the cost of losing Ferrell.
It is also important to remember that Dallas could match any offer Ferrell signs if they extend the qualifying offer.
Here are four lading spots for Yogi Ferrell this summer.
1.) Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks love Yogi Ferrell and Ferrell could obviously be back in Dallas next season.
This is where he got his first real chance in the league and the Mavericks helped Ferrell get to the level he is at now. He proved his versatility this past season by spending a large amount of time at the shooting guard position.
Smith Jr. is back as the starter and J.J. Barea had arguably his best season of his career. Then you have the possibility of bringing Seth Curry back and/or Devin Harris.
What is the price to bring Ferrell back as a third point guard and backup shooting guard?
It might come down to Ferrell, Harris or Curry for Dallas.
2.) Denver Nuggets
Denver decided to give up on Emmanuel Mudiay last season when they traded him to the New York Knicks at the trade deadline. They received Devin Harris in return to be their new backup point guard.
Jamal Murray will be back as the starting point, but after him, they are pretty thin. Harris and Barton are both free agents. That leaves just Murray, Harris, and Beasley as the only guards on the roster.
Denver will have money and could make a run at Ferrell.
3.) Indiana Pacers
A return to Indiana for Yogi Ferrell.
The Pacers already brought back a Hoosier in Victor Oladipo and could make it another one in a four-year starter at Indiana: Yogi Ferrell.
The Pacers will be one of the only teams over the summer with loads of cap space as key players such as Myles Turner and Domantas Sabonis are still on their rookie contracts. Cory Joesph has a player option for around $8 million and Darren Collison has a non-guaranteed contract worth $10 million.
Collison had a good year, but Ferrell could be viewed as a young upgrade over him alongside Oladipo.
4.) Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns are one of the other teams this summer that will have a plethora amount of cap space to spend and will most likely go for some heavy hitters.
They already have wings in Devin Booker, Josh Jackson and T.J. Warren. Assuming they go big in the draft in June, this leaves their point guard spot wide open heading into the summer.
They traded for Elfrid Payton at the trade deadline, but he is set to hit restricted free agency.
Phoenix could look to Yogi Ferrell as both a cheaper option and an upgrade to Payton.
Next: Dallas Should Pursue Josh Huestis
Honorable Mention: Orlando Magic. Orlando could go small in the draft and could be pressed for money this summer after an extension for Aaron Gordon.
