Dallas Mavericks guard, J.J. Barea, has been nominated by the Professional Basketball Writers Association for the 2017-18 J. Walter Citizenship Award for demonstrating outstanding dedication and service to the community. Others nominated are Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, and Dwyane Wade.

From tragedy to natural disaster and everything in between, the United States and the world went through a crazy year in 2017. When bad things happen, some people have to step up, and in this case, many professional athletes did just that to get the word out about people and places that need help.

We all remember hearing about the incredible efforts that J.J. Watt went through to raise money for victims of Hurricane Harvey down in Houston. While raising millions of dollars personally and vocally in every area of his life, there was no doubt that Watt was a man of the community.

These NBA players are also undoubtedly men of their communities and of the world as a whole. We have seen J.J. Barea many times serving the community of Dallas in one way or another and this year, the nomination is definitely earned by J.J.

Here are the nominees and their listed accomplishments, per ProBasketballWriters.org:

Carmelo Anthony: For his efforts in the aid of those affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

Kevin Durant: For his work done towards helping youth from low-income backgrounds through educational, athletic, and social programs.

James Harden: For his work in helping the community of Houston after the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Dwyane Wade: For the efforts made in response to the shooting in Parkland, Florida and the “March For Our Lives” movement.

J.J. Barea: For the efforts made to get food, water, and financial aid to the people of his home country, Puerto Rico, following the destruction of Hurricane Maria.

All of these players have done incredible things both on and off the court this year and are deserving of recognition for those efforts. For more information on the specifics of these player’s accomplishments in community aid, please visit the link above.
