Turnovers were key in the Dallas Mavericks (22-46) win over the New York Knicks (24-44) on Tuesday night. The Knicks turned the basketball over 19 times to the Mavericks 12, and the Mavericks were able to capitalize on them and pull away in the second half.

The Knicks had numbers. Emmanuel Mudiay and Courtney Lee were setting up an easy basket against Yogi Ferrell, but Ferrell had other plans. As Mudiay tried to pass it to Lee for an easy layup, Ferrell stepped in front of the errant pass and raced down the court to launch a 3-pointer that was nothing but net.

It was that kind of night for the Knicks. The Knicks turned the ball over 19 times, and the Dallas Mavericks were able to take advantage of the turnovers and turn them into easy points.

The Knicks

The New York Knicks were unstoppable in the first half.  It seemed they couldn’t miss, and they took a 60-57 lead into halftime. As a team, the Knicks shot an impressive 49 percent from the field. However, turnovers would be the Knicks undoing in the second half. The Mavericks made a 14-0 run in the third period and never looked back.  Michael Beasley led the Knicks with 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting.

The Mavericks by the numbers

Harrison Barnes led the Mavericks in the win with 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting. As a team, the Mavericks shot 45 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range and 89 percent from the free throw line.

These impressive numbers come nights after the Mavericks shot 35 percent from the field and just 16 percent from 3-point range in a loss to the Houston Rockets. Also joining Barnes in double figure scoring was Dennis Smith Jr. Smith scored 17 points on 6 -of-19 shooting. Also, Yogi Ferrell scored just 10 points, but they were big.

Eight of Ferrell’s 10 points came in the Mavericks 14-0 run in the third period that changed the outcome of the game. Dirk Nowitzki contributed 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Lastly, J.J Barea scored 12 points and dished out seven assists.
