The Dallas Mavericks fanbase was torn today as they said hello to a bright, young talent in Doug McDermott, but had to say goodbye to a Mavs fan favorite, Devin Harris. Maybe MFFLs won’t have to be sad for too long.

Sometimes, it is easy to forget that the NBA is a business. When NBA players give it their all for the team, it seems downright disrespectful to trade them. Devin Harris gave it his all for the Dallas Mavericks for the better part of nine seasons and yet now he is with the Denver Nuggets, thanks to the three-team trade that brought the Mavs Doug McDermott.

Many franchises would throw these players around like assets without a second thought, but the Mavericks front office is different. People in Dallas know that the Mavs front office is loyal to their players, perhaps even to a fault. In the press conference with Donnie Nelson after the trade deadline passed, that loyaly was on full display.

Our very own Isaac Harris was present for the press conference. Here are just a few of the quotes he pulled from Donnie Nelson, General Manager of the Dallas Mavericks.

“Bittersweet day. We drafted him, watched him grow up. He will forever be a part of the family and in my opinion he will end his career here. He really is the epitome of what a Dallas Maverick is all about. He is cut from the same cloth as Dirk and Michael and is really everything we want our young guys to be. Difficult day to say the least but this is an opportunity for Devin to play for a team that is fighting for the playoffs.”

Donnie Nelson was pretty emotional during his time at the press conference. It was obvious that he and the Mavs front office noticed and cared about what Devin Harris did. He was a great player on the court but he was an even better person off the court. Nelson went on to say these things.

“It is hard for all of us,” Nelson said.“It is a really gut wrenching deal to go through with and one we really wrestled with.”

After all the sadness of losing Devin settled down a little bit, the really important part of the press conference started up. Donnie Nelson was asked about his thoughts on Devin Harris for the future and, since he is on a 1-year contract right now, of course people wanted to know if there was any way Devin would come back home. Donnie Nelson had this to say about possibly pursuing Harris once again.

“I think this summer. Obviously he will have different opportunities but I think eventually he will find his way back to big D to close it out.”

That first quote sounds a little bit like speculation, which isn’t surprising since he doesn’t know what Devin may be thinking. This second part makes it a little more exciting.

“Hey, in two months he will probably be right back here in the big D,” Nelson said.

Devin Harris is a great player and one the Mavericks have been spoiled to be able to watch for most of his career. This shows how much the organization likes Devin and how much he likes being here as well. No one wants to see him go, but everyone wants to see him come back.

There is no telling for sure what Devin Harris might do this summer, but if Donnie Nelson knows something we don’t (and trust me, he does), then this report definitely means something. Be patient Mavs fans, the front office is doing what they need to.
