News broke today that Dallas Mavericks shooting guard, Seth Curry, will miss the remainder of the season to undergo surgery on his left tibia.
Seth Curry will not play a single game this NBA season, as reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. For a 27-year old in a contract year, this is likely a pretty tough pill to swallow, which is probably why surgery was considered the last resort option for the sharpshooter.
This news comes within weeks of Coach Carlisle saying that Curry will play in 2018. Clearly, Carlisle meant the fall of 2018 as the report shows Curry will be ready to go by this summer.
A lot of the Mavericks hope was riding on the idea that Seth Curry would be back to spark the offense at some point this season. Now realizing that the team as it currently stands is the team for the rest of the season, Dallas’ playoff chances are dwindling.
Although this news is tough for Dallas and MFFLs, it is much worse for Seth Curry. Curry has been rehabbing this leg injury all season in hopes of getting back on the court, but had he known where it was going to end up, surgery would’ve likely been done much sooner.
Aside from that, Curry is 27 years old and coming off the best season of his NBA career so far. There were high hopes that he would be playing great and ready to earn a big contract this summer, but the injury definitely hampers the chance of any big contract happening.
It is likely that we will see Curry sign a 2-year deal this summer, with a player option in the second year in hopes of proving himself for a big deal before he turns 30. If that is the case, the chances of Dallas retaining him are pretty likely.
Seth Curry is a fan favorite in Dallas and this news comes as a big disappointment for the team, but does not change anything that they haven’t already been doing. We look forward to seeing Curry next year, and hope that it comes in a Mavericks uniform.
