Dallas Mavericks point guard, Dennis Smith Jr., has reportedly accepted an invitation to participate in the NBA Dunk Contest during All-Star Weekend. This probably doesn’t come as a surprise to most of us, but MFFLs should definitely be excited to see what he can really do.
As reported by Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports (via Twitter), the Dallas Mavericks will have a representative at the All-Star festivities on the weekend of February 16th-18th. Dennis Smith Jr., the Mavs rookie with the explosive vertical and highlight reel in-game dunks has reportedly accepted an invitation to participate in the All-Star Dunk Contest this year.
This report comes as little to no surprise for those of us who have watched DSJ dunk on the world night after night. The youngster from North Carolina State came into the NBA as possibly the most athletic rookie in the draft. After a reported 48″ vertical began circulating in many NBA circles, most people wanted to know if he could back that up in a real game.
They did not have to wait long as the first play of the Dallas Mavericks season was an alley-oop designed for DSJ. After each game, the Mavs point guard has continued to impress and a dunk contest seemed imminent. Although we are unsure of the other contestants at this point, the contest will likely be more entertaining than last year when Glenn Robinson III beat out Derrick Jones Jr. for the title.
Dennis Smith Jr. should be viewed as the favorite regardless of who else is in the contest. It is time for the judges to be reminded what really constitutes a 50-point dunk, instead of the every other thing that has been going on in the recent, lame dunk contests. DSJ is ready to bring some life back to what used to be the most exciting part of the NBA All-Star weekend.
Just take a look at some of the things this kid is capable of.
Or this one…
Or my personal favorite…
Dennis Smith definitely earned this invite and we are all excited to see what he is capable of in the contest. The competition will be important, but there is really no one in the NBA that can elevate like DSJ. You know he is my pick for Dunk Contest Champion.
