The Dallas Mavericks have not been a team with a bonafide lead scorer since Dirk Nowitzki was dropping nearly 20 a game. All success from this season has come thanks to team scoring efforts, with multiple players hitting double-digits. Which Mav is going to break out for a 40-point game first this season?

A few years ago, if someone told you a Dallas Mavericks player scored over 40-points in a game, your only question would be who Dirk Nowitzki was playing against. Sadly, that has not been the case for a couple years as Dirk’s age has increased and his minutes have decreased.

That is not to say that Dirk is now incapable of scoring 40 points. There may never be a day in his life where catching fire is not at least a possibility. However, Dallas has other scorers around him now that can also heat up on certain nights. Although the team effort has been the key to any Mavs success so far this season, anything can happen.

There have been 20 instances of 40+ point games so far this season, including James Harden twice, Khris Middleton twice, and Giannis Antetokounmpo twice. Some unexpected players to land 40 in a night include Lou Williams, Donovan Mitchell, Aaron Gordon, and Nikola Vucevic. Clearly the Mavs have a chance to score 40 and have scorers that can do it, but when will they.

The staff here at The Smoking Cuban give their picks on who would be the first Mavericks player to drop 40 in a night. Here is what they said.
