For my final segment of potential Dallas Mavericks free agent targets, we get into the position of the most need for the Mavs: the point guard. Here are a few to keep an ear to the ground for.

Of all the positions on a basketball team, the one of most need to the Dallas Mavericks is undoubtedly at point guard. And even more specific than that, the starting point guard is what is needed most for Dallas.

Obviously Mavs fans realize that Dallas has a good contingency of point guards on the roster right now, but these players are not equipped to compete with the stars at the point guard position currently in the league. Not just anyone can compete with the Russell Westbrook’s and James Harden’s of the league.

Yogi Ferrell was one of the lone bright spots to the Mavericks last season with his explosive play and ability, but for now he is not ready to be a regular starter in the league on a team looking to compete. J.J. Barea is getting older, as is Devin Harris, and Seth Curry still prefers his fit at the shooting guard spot rather than point.

Obviously the Mavericks are interested in finding their solution in a point guard heavy draft class, but that does not mean that we are going to have any guarantee. Dennis Smith Jr., Frank Ntilikina, and even Malik Monk may be on the radar for Dallas at the 9th pick.

The draft is also likely to be grounds for the Mavs to find a point guard that will need some development, which all of the names listed above would need. This is part of the reason free agency is so vital to Dallas this year. We have a number of opportunities but here is a list of names that Dallas could pursue this offseason.

Keep in mind that we already know the Mavericks have a lot of interest in Jrue Holiday so I decided to skip him in the list below. For more information on his potential fit in Dallas, read here.

Next: Kyle Lowry
