The Dallas Mavericks continue their streak of roster moves this season with Tony Romo signed as “Maverick for a Day” followed by the claiming of former Kentucky Wildcat, DeAndre Liggins.
This season has been one that the Dallas Mavericks will likely want to forget, however, the Mavs have been so active on the trade market and waiver wire, it has been tough to keep up with all of their moves. That may not help this season, but fans are going to be excited as time goes on.
It started shortly before the trade deadline, as the Mavericks went through guard after guard looking for a temporary filler until J.J. Barea, Devin Harris, and Deron Williams were healthy again. During the search, Dallas found a gem in Yogi Ferrell.
After Ferrell, the Mavericks trade deadline talks heated up hours before it passed and made an important long term move, sending old veteran Andrew Bogut and under-performing youngster, Justin Anderson to Philadelphia for a great piece in Nerlens Noel.
The moves continued to happen, although on a smaller scale as Dallas signed Jarrod Uthoff to a multi-year deal. Dallas followed that one up with a shout-out to Dallas Cowboys’ great, Tony Romo who will be honored tonight as a “Dallas Maverick for a Day”.
What many assumed had to be the last move the Mavs would make before the offseason started are undoubtedly surprised by the news today that the Dallas Mavericks have claimed former Cleveland Cavaliers guard, DeAndre Liggins from the waivers. News broke today by Yahoo’s Shams Charania.
This is an excellent pickup for the Mavs as they gain a lockdown defender at the guard position in Liggins. As a member of the Cavs, Liggins played in 61 gamed but got significant play time in only a handful of those. Liggins is not considered an offensive threat by any means, sticking mostly to the defensive end of the court.
Although he only averaged 2.4 points per game this season, Liggins shooting percentage is not bad. He shoots about 38% from the floor and from the 3-point line this season. He has also averaged about 1.7 rebounds and 1 assist per game in his first meaningful season since being drafted in the 2nd round of the 2011 NBA Draft.
Although there is a lot of polishing left for his game, DeAndre Liggins was just gift-wrapped to the Dallas Mavericks who will give him a chance to be a key component in the defensive efforts for the team in the near future. Just take a look at how he played against Steph Curry on Christmas Day of this season.
With a lot more question marks on the roster than ever before for the Mavs, Liggins should be someone to keep an eye on. Offseason is just around the corner and MFFLs should not be surprised if he is kept here in Dallas for the foreseeable future. He definitely has a case to be made.
