In an offseason where the Mavericks only have a handful of players still under contract, we turn our attention to Raymond Felton and his chances of returning to Dallas.

With the Dallas Mavericks free agent plans up in the air, many fans are wondering what the strategy is for Raymond Felton. Felton is set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer and it is coming right on the heels of one of his better seasons.

Felton appears ready to seek a bigger contract from whoever will offer it, and a lot of teams I assume are very interested. Outside of the top few point guards available this offseason, (Mike Conley, Rajon Rondo, and Deron Williams), Felton becomes one of the more intriguing options.

With a history of being a starting point guard prior to coming to Dallas, Felton has found himself as the 6th man and primary backup at each guard position for the Mavs. Some may not be a fan of this but Ray-Ray looked great in his role as such.

As I said earlier, many other teams are going to be interested in bringing Felton to their squad. Possibly a starter, but more likely a key contributor off the bench. Are the Mavericks going to be able to keep him around?

It was reported earlier this week, (per STAR Telegram and @GametimeDAL), in an interview with Raymond Felton that he would love to be back in a Dallas Mavericks uniform. Could that be the key component to keeping him in Dallas? The beauty of it all is that he knows what it is like here and what his role is. We may be able to offer a little bit less than the other teams to keep him around.

This is, unfortunately, a familiar situation for the Mavericks and owner, Mark Cuban. Many players in the past have said over and over that they would love to end up back in Dallas but, we try and take advantage of that statement by chasing other players first which backfires on us.

I personally hope that Dallas does not do this with Felton. He has proven how important he can be to our team and we would have trouble finding someone as versatile and tenacious as Ray-Ray to replace him. He has earned a decent contract and I hope that works in our plan.
