The Dallas Mavericks choked away another win in overtime against an unfamiliar Orlando Magic roster.

The Dallas Mavericks collapsed late in the game against a newly reorganized Orlando Magic squad tonight in an overtime flop. After a surprisingly quiet trade deadline period for Dallas, the same team took the floor once again and, unfortunately, did not bring any new fire with them. This was made painfully evident in the beginning and at the end of the game.

The first quarter was one we can gladly forget for Dallas. Falling behind by 21 in the opening 12 minutes of a game is a difficult thing to do. The Mavs found a way though when they looked up at the scoreboard with 44 seconds left and saw a 31-10 deficit. Luckily a Wesley Matthews 3-pointer just a few seconds later made it only a 31-13 pummeling after the opening quarter.

Whew!

The second quarter was a much different story. Dallas came out with fire, energy and life right from the inbound pass. An absolute three-point barrage that could put even the Golden State Warriors to shame ensued throughout the quarter as the Mavericks made 9 long balls between Charlie Villanueva, Chandler Parsons, Deron Williams and JJ Barea. The comeback was so fast and aggressive that Dallas erased the entire 21-point difference in just over 9 minutes.

After the half, Dallas was still down by 5 but quickly made up that deficit again with a 30-16 advantage through the quarter. More 3-pointers and an excellent quarter by Parsons put the Mavs up by 9 going into what should have been the final 12 minutes of the game. Orlando looked beat and the Mavs had every bit of momentum riding into the quarter.

The fourth turned out to be just as ugly as the first however, as Dallas made only 5 field goals and went 6-10 from the free throw line. Even though Orlando was not shooting the ball well themselves, they were still able to come back and tie the game up before the end of regulation. And once again, the Mavericks have overtime.

The final 5 minutes were possibly the worst of all as Dallas had only one field goal and 1-2 from the free throw line before a desperation long 3-pointer fell for D-Will with 9 seconds left. In the end, Dallas fell to the Magic with a score of 110-104.

The Mavericks were led in scoring by Deron Williams with 25 and Chandler Parsons with 24. Zaza Pachulia earned another double-double with 11 points and 19 rebounds and D-Will led the way with 7 assists.

HIGHLIGHT: The highlight for the Dallas Mavericks was a toss-up between Chandler Parsons and the 3-point shooting. Parsons dropped 24 points on the night but was an impressive 9-11 shooting. He also started the game 6-6 from beyond the arc but missed his last attempt in the third quarter.

Dallas also lit it up from 3-point land going 19-41 and setting a new franchise record in the process. Parsons and Williams were certainly the hot hands making 11 of the 19 3’s for Dallas.

LOWLIGHT: The rebounding for the Mavericks was especially bad tonight as we were out boarded by a subpar rebounding Magic team 63-45. An 18 rebound deficit cannot happen on a regular basis for Dallas if they want to win more games this year. In other words, Zaza needs some help on the glass.
