One of the biggest all-star snubs left off the roster on Thursday was Dirk Nowitzki, but is this the best thing to happen for the Dallas Mavericks?

Most Mavericks fans, and even some people across the league, thought that Nowitzki would be named as a reserve on Thursday night due to him leading the surprising Mavericks to a 26-22 record at the 6th seed in the Western Conference.

But could this be the best thing to happen to the Mavericks and Dirk?

Wednesday night in Golden State, Nowitzki found himself resting as he took the night off. During a break in the game, ESPN’s J.A. Adande sit down at the end of the bench to interview Nowitzki when he brought up the idea of making the All-Star team. Dirk discussed the honor it would be to make the team, but he also notably mentioned what he would do if he didn’t.

I think the best think for the Mavs is for their 37-year old veteran, who has been the catalyst for the team, to take a much-needed extended rest on the beach with his family. No workouts. No scrimmaging. Just plain rest.

Nowitzki finds himself averaging over 30 minutes a game this season. He also has played in all but five games on the season as the Mavs just passed the midway point of the season.

Even at 37 years old, Nowitzki finds himself leading the Mavs in scoring as they will look to make a second half run at finishing in the middle of the playoff seeding in the West. Even with the recent rise in the play of Chandler Parsons, the Mavs will need all hands on deck come playoff time.

Echoing the same mindset on Nowitzki, the break for all the Mavs should do good as the Mavs have a team centered around veterans who could probably use a good break from everything.

Of course, Nowitzki (or Pachulia) could be named as a replacement if someone is unable to play due to injury, but I’m rooting for a different replacement at this point. To be frankly, I think Nowitzki would agree.

So before you get all huffy about Dirk missing the All-Star Game, remember that this could be the best thing for the better good of the Mavericks’ season.
