Dallas Mavericks Trade Talk: Bringing Blair Back

Could the Dallas Mavericks possibly bring DeJuan Blair back?

More from Mavs News

With the Mavs having a plethora of expiring contracts and in a win-now mindset, I have been on record for saying that Cuban & Co. will be one of the most active teams on the trade market come this winter.

That being said, over the next couple of weeks I will be throwing out trade possibilities (using the ESPN Trade Machine) that the Mavericks could look into while presenting logic from both sides. Some trades will be bigger trades, while some will be minor. There have been no previous rumors of these trades, just pure speculation on my part.

Speaking of minor trades, the following is my first possibility…

Mavericks: Before all you Dwight Powell worshipers come out of your caves to track me down, hear me out for a second. What are you really expecting from Powell this year? Call me a Powell hater I guess, but I just can’t see him banging on the block and holding his ground. Insert former ‘fan-favorite’ DeJuan Blair.

Going back a couple of years ago to the first round playoff series against San Antonio, Blair gave the Mavs that punch (and kick) off the bench that was desperately needed. He gave the Mavs that physical, tough rebounding presence that countered Dirk quite well off the bench. With the team being vocal about focusing on rebounding, the Mavs could rescue their old pal off the bench in Washington.

Swapping Raymond Felton and Ramon Sessions would be somewhat even though I actually think Sessions would be an upgrade over Felton. Sessions is a taller point guard standing at 6’3″ while also shooting over 40% behind the arc last year after joining the Wizards. With the Wizards adding Gary Neal and still having Garrett Temple, the backup point guard duties would be up for grabs with Felton.

Wizards: This deal is obviously centered around how they feel about Dwight Powell and their role for DeJuan Blair going forward. Blair took the ‘greener pastures’ route to Washington a couple of summers ago only to find himself buried on the bench this past year. Washington could actually give a more athletic Powell some solid minutes at the 4 backing up Nene.

The Felton/Sessions swap would probably be more from a Mavericks standpoint as Dallas is giving up the younger Powell in the deal. Although some would argue that Felton and Sessions are equal when it comes to the court.

Considering John Wall‘s injury history, giving up Sessions might not be ideal, but might tempt them enough for a young athletic four who could help them play at a faster pace.

The deal obviously doesn’t do a whole lot for either squad but could make sense for both. If Blair is just going to ride the bench like last season, why not ship him for a younger power forward in Powell with potential? If Powell isn’t in the long-term plans going forward as a key contributor, why not ship him for the rebounding punch in Blair to help this season?

Once again this is pure speculation, but if you are Cuban, would you consider this deal?
