ESPN: Wes, D-Will, Rondo among “worst newcomers” of the summer

ESPN continued with its NBA Forecast stuff today by naming their “Worst Newcomers of 2015-16”, and for Mavs fans it contained some interesting names.

With 14 first place votes – more than the rest of the top-5 combined – Rajon Rondo, now with the Sacramento Kings, was named worst of the worst.

Seems like an appropriate selection after his disastrous tenure with the Mavericks which ended when he essentially quit on the team during their first round playoff series against the Rockets.

Rondo may see a bit of a resurgence under point guard-friendly head coach George Karl but I think it’s fair to say his best days are behind him and as his skills continue to diminish he’s going to become more of a headache.

Lance Stephenson finished second in voting, but the three and four spots should interest Mavs fans, too.

New shooting guard Wesley Matthews was third on the list followed by his backcourt mate Deron Williams.

ESPN noted that, “price, expectations, etc.” was used as criteria for the voting. I can see Matthews being included; he’s replacing the team’s leading scorer, just signed a max deal, and is coming off of a torn achilles.

But Williams’ inclusion is a bit puzzling. He certainly had his problems in Brooklyn, which I suppose would classify as “etc.” in this case, but he’s on a team-friendly deal and as far as I know, nobody is realistically expecting a return to All-Star form.

Rounding out the top-5 was new Lakers center Roy Hibbert. See who else got votes here, it includes a couple other former Mavs.
