Richard Jefferson Deserves some Love

After another impressive performance while filling in for the injured Chandler Parsons it’s about time Richard Jefferson gets some love.

Now, I’ll be honest. I have never been a big fan of Jefferson. But even I can admit that other than obliterating Rajon Rondo‘s face he’s played pretty well for the Mavericks this season even with his role with the team fluctuating the way it has.

But his professionalism is part of the reason he’s still in the league. Say what you will about him, but when his number is called he’s been ready to go.

This has been apparent recently in the four games Chandler Parsons has been out with a knee injury. Jefferson has stepped in to replace him in the starting lineup and the results have been positive.

Against the Lakers he scored 17 points on 4-7 shooting, hit 2-4 from three-point range, and got to the line 9 times. This came after 24 points and four three-pointers against the Nuggets.

Jefferson has averaged 15 points while starting the last four games, connecting on 47% of his shots from the field and 44% of his attempts from long range. And he’s done a great job attacking the rim, averaging almost five free throws a night and dunking on anyone in his way.

The Mavericks will need some scoring punch and outside shooting off the pine during the playoffs, and with Parsons’ health a question mark Jefferson may be needed more than ever. He and Amar’e Stoudemire (along with J.J. Barea and Devin Harris) give the Mavericks quite a bit of veteran leadership and playoff experience for the second unit, things that can go a long way against younger, inexperienced reserves they may face during the postseason.

And if Parsons’ knee is still bothersome upon his return you can bet Jefferson will be ready to step in and contribute in his stead.
