Power Ranking the Mavs: Tyson takes over in Week 6

1) Tyson Chandler

Last week: 4 (up 3 spots)

This has been a long time coming. Tyson has consistently been the Mavs’ best all-around player, averaging a double-double so far this season (11.3 points & rebounds per game). Chandler has earned a double-double in half of Dallas’s games so far this season, and come close in 3 others. Further, he has been the Mavericks’ best defensive player, best rebounder, and the all-around highest energy guy. He probably deserved to be #1 on this list weeks ago, but sometimes consistency doesn’t always catch the eye.

2) Dirk Nowitzki

Last week: 2 (no change)

Dirk got a night off against Philly, but scored 15, 30, and 22 in the 3 games prior to that (with 11 rebounds in the embarrassing loss to Indiana). Prior to the Toronto game, the Mavs looked quite embarrassing, but Dirk was still mostly Dirk.

3) Monta Ellis

Last week: 3 (no change)

Monta started the week off really off, but then just went OFF against Toronto and Philly. Monta dropped 30 on the best team in the East, and then followed that up with 18 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals against the worst team in the East.

4) Brandan Wright

Last week: 1 (down 3 spots)

So Brandan Wright had his first off week of the season. It was crazy. After a string of 10 straight games in double-digit scoring, Wright has put up fewer than 10 points in the past three games. He’s been so good this season that it has been downright bizarre seeing him miss shots the past few games.

5) Chandler Parsons

Last week: 7 (up 2 spots)

Chandler Parsons on the other hand, has produced 4 straight double-digit scoring games. I’m still skeptical, but dude has looked more like the Mavs’ 3rd or 4th best player this week rather than their 5th or 6th best player. So progress, right?

6) Al-Farouq Aminu

Last week: 5 (down 1 spot)

Aminu contributed 14 points to the Mavs’ impressive win against the Raptors. He has continued to be really great off the bench, bringing energy and grit whenever he appears. Dude even earned a start when Dirk got the night off against Philly.

7) J.J. Barea

Last week: 6 (down 1 spot)

PG continues to be the Mavs’ biggest positional weakness. JJ moves down a spot in the rankings but is still the Mavs’ best PG right now. That’s where we’re at now, though for the record, neither Jameer nor Ray played much this week.

8) Devin Harris

Last week: 9 (up 1 spot)

Devin was out for a few games due to injury and has come back slowly. Got close to a double-double against the Knicks with 9 points & 8 assists, and scored 15 against the Sixers.

9) Richard Jefferson

Last week: 12 (up 3 spots)

Jefferson continues to underwhelm. Dude was a starter last year and yet still didn’t even play in 2 of the last 4 games. But he had 10 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds against Philly, and I really don’t care for Charlie V.

10) Charlie Villenueva

Last week: 13 (up 3 spots)

I won’t admit that Charlie V is any good. But he had some good minutes against the NBA’s worst team and is better than Jae Crowder apparently.

11) Jae Crowder

Last week: 11 (no change)

Jae didn’t move down the rankings, but his play has been… less than encouraging. He is basically only getting minutes because he can play defense, and yet he was basically just a turnstyle for Kyle Lowry at the end of the Raptors game when Dallas REALLY needed his defense.

12)  Jameer Nelson

Last week: 8 (down 4 spots)

Jameer has been out with some sort of injury. All I will say is that the Mavs are undefeated with Jameer in a suit. Read into that what you will. (Hint: Jameer is the problem)

13) Greg Smith

Last week: 10 (down 3 spots)

I really thought Greg was going to be a great backup this season. But dude has done absolutely nothing with what little time he has been given and is now thoroughly an afterthought in Rick Carlisle’s game planning.

14) Raymond Felton

Last week: 14 (no change)

Considering Jameer’s shortcomings, I am really surprised that Carlisle elected not to play Felton at the earliest possible chance. Allegedly Ray is still hampered by injury.
