The season is over, and all we can do is either look back or look ahead. We’re going to take some time and look back, and the TSC team will be grading the Dallas Mavericks.
First up?!
Jose Calderon: 11.4 points, 44.9% 3-pt, 4.7 assists, 1.3 turnovers
Ace Feltman (@MFFeLtman): B- I have always loved Jose Calderon and he was an A+ compared to last season’s messy carousel/casserole of Collison-Fisher-James in 2014. But where his jumper from mid and 3-point range were a welcomed sight, he couldn’t guard a Fathead and had his lowest assist total since his rookie year…and he played 81 games this year, his second highest of his 9 year career.
Brian Gosset (@Gosset41): B Calderon got better as the season came to an end. He continued to have a high percentage in 3-pointers, but I would’ve liked to see his points average higher. He did a good job at spreading the floor, but he was second on the team in assists (Ellis). He was also a liability on defense because of his speed. It’s tough to say if I would like him to start next year or someone like a Devin Harris. I think it works the way it is because someone like Harris plays well off the bench.
Bailey Rogers (@BRogers789): B Calderon was absolutely vital to the offense and usually a big liability to the defense. It felt like Calderon would often come up with huge shots when there was a lid on the rim for everyone else. And (unlike Monta for regular intervals) I felt like Calderon actually tried on the defensive end, even if he is old and slow. In the end, I think he would be much better coming off of the bench as a veteran scoring punch.
Jose De Leon (@JoseOfLion06): B To start the season, I thought this was going to be an easy “A” but playing with someone like Monta Ellis proved otherwise. I’m not saying playing with Ellis is a bad thing but Ellis does like to run the offense and last time I checked, they only use one ball per game. Calderon is a an elite playmaker but having those two on the floor at the same time almost completely eliminated that part of Calderon’s game. If not for his great shooting ability, Calderon easily could have been a liability on the floor. I sure hope they give Calderon more opportunities to create chances for the team next season.
Rami Michail (@RamiMichail): B Jose did everything we expected him to do after signing a 4-year deal. He hit shots, took care of the ball, and was a defensive liability. Not enough can be said about him sacrificing his game to better the Mavs though. Not many point guards would accept having the ball taken out of their hands, but Calderon had no issue with Monta Ellis running the show while he spotted up from 3. His defense will once again be a concern next season, but this is nothing new.
