News broke on Thursday morning about Chandler Parsons and his torn meniscus requiring season ending knee surgery. Could the Dallas Mavericks look to add a free agent?

Most NBA fans know the importance of Chandler Parsons to the Dallas Mavericks. After spending the first half of the season easing back from his knee surgery last year, Parsons had turned the corner on the jump that he was supposed to make in his career. He was showing the Mavericks the player Dallas had hoped to sign two summers ago. Then this happened.

Now the Mavericks face a dilemma heading into the final playoff push. They sit just a game ahead of the Jazz in the 8th spot in the West and now lose arguably their second best player…some say their best overall player. So what do the Mavericks do?

One option is to obviously role with the team as is like they did against Portland on Sunday. Roll out Wesley Matthews at the small forward spot and bring back Zaza Pachulia at starting center. Raymond Felton would get the majority of minutes at shooting guard. This could also open up minutes for rookies Justin Anderson and Salah Mejri.

Another option is to look at the free agent market for players who would be eligible to join a team and compete in the playoffs. This is where the Mavs could entertain a veteran wingman who could log some minutes off the bench.

Enter Dorell Wright.

Dorell Wright last played in the NBA back for the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2014-15 season where he averaged just 12 minutes a game and shot 38% from behind the arc. His role in Portland was regulated more towards a veteran leadership role as the Blazers looked to develop some of their younger players (among them was Wesley Matthews).

After finishing the season in Portland, he made his way to China last season where he averaged 24 points per game and shot 35% from behind the arc, all while averaging almost 31 minutes a night.

Now the Chinese Basketball Association is over and Dorell Wright is free to sign with any NBA team if both sides come to an agreement. An agreement that would allow Wright to play in the playoffs if the team did indeed make it their.

Will the Mavs come calling?

It is unsure at the moment, but Wright could bring some contributions to the Mavericks. First off, he is a veteran player that would know his role, something we all know Rick Carlisle loves. Second, he is a career 35% shooter from the three-point line, something the Mavs could roll out in the bench unit and be a weapon from behind the arc.

Wright is also just 30 years old. Now that isn’t a young gun by no means in the NBA, but still younger than what people probably think he is. He stands at 6’7″ and would give the Mavericks another wing defending option off the bench. With Parsons out, do the Mavericks even have a small forward on the roster?

I’m not saying Wright would be the perfect fit or the savior to the season, but he could give the Mavericks some wing help off the bench.
