Dallas Mavericks Trade Talk: Gibson, Hinrich to Mavs?

If the Bulls finally decide to move on from Taj Gibson, would the Dallas Mavericks be interested?

More from Mavs News

It seems that over the past couple of years rumors has swirled around if the Bulls are going to let go of their backup big man Taj Gibson and it seems that those rumors will only intensify. With Gibson being due roughly 18 million over the next two years, along with the emergence of Nikola Mirotic and the addition of first-round draft pick Bobby Portis; Gibson could be expendable.

This is the second installment of the trade series as I discuss trade ideas that I think the Mavs front office would consider if the situation presented itself. In the first installment I discussed the possibility of trading for former Maverick, DeJuan Blair (read here).

I am not saying these trades are trades I would exactly do, but rather possible ideas. I have been on record for saying the Mavs will be on of the most active teams come this winter so the following deal is one that could make some sense for both sides using ESPN’s NBA Trade Machine.

Bulls: I’m going to start with Chicago since most of you will probably think this isn’t fair on their part the most, but hear me out. Last year the Bulls went with Joakim Noah and Pau Gasol as their starting front court while Mike Dunleavy held down the starting small forward spot. Off the bench was a combination of Nikola Mirotic, Taj Gibson, Tony Snell, and a slightly used Doug McDermott when healthy. Now add first round pick Bobby Portis to the bunch, who had a pretty decent looking Summer League.

Gibson is due roughly 18 million over the next two years and will likely split minutes with an emerging Mirotic and newcomer Bobby Portis. Why not save some money in cap and continue to let your young players develop?

With this trade holding salary cap value for the Bulls, the biggest piece they would get back would arguably be Devin Harris. Harris would instantly take over the Hinrich role of backup point guard behind Rose, while being able to play some shooting guard  at the same time.

Felton would simply provide backup point guard depth and battle for minutes with Aaron Brooks or be waived.

The intriguing piece would be Dwight Powell and how Chicago views him. Some people (please don’t get me started on these people) think that Powell is a future star, while some (hey, that’s me) think the is a decent backup at best. Chicago could view him as another young piece they can develop with Mirotic/Portis behind an aging Gasol.

To make the deal work, the Bulls would most likely add in Kirk Hinrich or Aaron Brooks. I added in Hinrich due to Brooks recently signed contract but it could go either way. The deal would save Chicago roughly 2.5 million this year and 4.5 million the next year.

Mavericks: I know it hurts trading away Devin Harris, but I think this trade could benefit the Mavs more than Harris this year. Yes it will eat into some of the Mavs spending money next year, but it would help the team win-now in these last couple of years for Dirk.

“No matter who started, Gibson would be an ideal combination with Dirk”

Gibson would step in right away as a compliment to Dirk Nowitzki. Now depending on your religious beliefs of Dirk coming off the bench, Gibson could spell him off the bench or regulate Dirk to a sixth man role. No matter who started, Gibson would be an ideal combination with Dirk in that he plays defense and rebounds well; while still possessing an offensive game.

I think Hinrich would simply take directly over the Devin Harris role that was carved out for this upcoming season. He would get some minutes at the backup point while playing off the ball at the same time. In giving up Felton and Harris, suddenly the Mavs would rely on J.J. Barea and Hinrich to carry the backup point duties.

In trading three for two, this would also open up another opportunity for a partial guarantee player to make the roster. Since the Mavs signed 84 partial guarantee contracts this offseason, it would be cool to see at least one of them make the roster.

Once again, this is pure speculation as there has been no rumors to my knowledge on these players, but if you were the Mavs front office, would you consider this trade?
