Should the Dallas Mavericks trade for Marvin Bagley III?

The only way the Mavs should trade for Bagley is if coach Jason Kidd and his staff believe they can help him unlock his potential. The 22-year-old was a consensus top-five player in the 2018 draft class. Yes, a lot can happen in three years, but the 6’11 big man still has 20 and ten potential with a developing jumper and some ability to protect the rim.

The fit with Marvin Bagley III and Kristaps Porzingis could be problematic. Neither player excels defending on the perimeter, so the Mavericks would have to stagger their minutes.

Fans have not seen the best from Bagley. He has wanted out of Sacramento for multiple seasons, and the Kings have struggled to develop the 22-year-old.

Yes, he is still packed with potential, but Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks want to go on a deep playoff run. Trading for a 22-year-old that needs time to develop and blossom does not align with the team’s current goals and should be avoided.

It will be interesting to see how this situation develops. Marvin Bagley III being completely out of the Sacramento Kings’ rotation was a surprise, but the team wants to improve their defense this season. Former Maverick Harrison Barnes is set to start at the four, and hopefully, Bagley is traded to a rebuilding team that helps him unlock his potential.
