The Dallas Mavericks have been a key part of the recent offensive explosion. They broke the record for the highest offensive rating in NBA history in 2020 with Luka Doncic leading their charge, but that mark was eclipsed by seven teams last season. Offense numbers are through the roof and continue to climb.

Bleacher Report ranked the best offenses since 2000 by looking at the team’s offensive efficiency compared to league average, and Dallas dominated the list with four of the top ten.

The rankings are a tribute to the greatness of Dirk Nowitzki. The Tall Baller from the G was the leading scorer on three of the top eight offenses since 2000, according to Bleacher Report. Here is a closer look at the list.

Luka’s 2020 Mavs checked in at ninth on the list, just ahead of the Brooklyn Nets from last season. Dallas spaced the floor beautifully and had Doncic attacking the rim relentlessly. The Mavericks are hoping to be back at the top of the offensive rankings this season with Doncic captaining their ship.

Dallas also ranked eighth, fourth, and topped the list in three straight years from 2002 to 2004. Dirk was leading the charge with Steve Nash and Michael Finley flanking him. Don Nelson was head coach as the Mavs made three straight postseason appearances and advanced to the Western Conference Finals in 2003.

Younger fans may not remember those teams, but Nowitzki was in his prime. He was still an elite athlete and had a dominant post-game. Dirk and Nash formed an unstoppable pick and roll combination with Finley as the third star and 20-point per game scorer.

The band broke up in 2004 as Nash departed in free agency with Finley leaving one year later. Nowitzki took another step and lead the Dallas Mavericks to the championship in 2011 to cement his legacy as an all-time great.

Dirk rejoined the organization this summer as a special advisor. Fans are about to see more of Nowitzki as the Mavs are planning his jersey retirement and statue unveiling in the near future. They were in the hunt nearly every year with the future Hall of Famer, and are hoping to build a similar team around Luka Doncic. The best is yet to come from their current 22-year-old, and fans will not want to miss it.
