The Dallas Mavericks have two All-Star starters this year in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, but the NBA put a twist on the format. For the first time, All-Star captains selected their teams just before tipoff. LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo took the reserves first before picking the other eight starters.

Luka was the third pick by LeBron among the starters with Joel Embiid going first overall. It is his fourth straight year in the event, and his third time as a starter. Luka’s team has not lost an All-Star game coming into Sunday night. Kyrie Irving was the second pick by LeBron, and he is playing in his eighth All-Star game. Giannis had the first pick among the reserves and took Damian Lillard with Jaren Jackson heading to Team LeBron as the final selection among the reserves.

Fans have already seen a ton of happenings from All-Star weekend and Sunday’s main event promises to be special. How much will Luka and Kyrie play together? Fans are hoping for a highlight or two from the two starters, and here is a closer look at what to expect in the game.

Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving land on Team LeBron for the 2023 NBA All-Star Game

Doncic has scored eight points in each of his first three All-Star games. He will pull off some crazy passes out of his bag of tricks, but it will likely be an otherwise uneventful night from LD. He told reporters on Wednesday that he is most excited about his vacation after the game.

Expect Irving to put on a show. He won All-Star Game MVP in 2014 with a 31-point double-double, and Kyrie is a free agent in the offseason. The 30-year-old point guard is an incredible ball-handler and shooter that loves to shine on the biggest stages. He has scored 20-plus three times in his seven previous All-Star appearances. How many will Irving drop in Salt Lake City? That show alone will be worth tuning in for on Sunday night.

The NBA All-Star Game features the Elam Ending, which always adds a bit of excitement to the event. There will be a game-winning shot on Feb. 19, but will it be one of the two Mavericks that hits it? Team LeBron has not lost since they switched to the captains format. Can Team Giannis finally end their streak? Who takes home MVP honors on Sunday night? All those questions will be answered in Salt Lake City, so do not miss it.

Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are still forming their bond and figuring out how to play together after the blockbuster trade. Both superstars will get a few days off before getting back to work, and they are eager to keep building that chemistry.

The Dallas Mavericks have six consecutive home games after the All-Star break, and they will be looking to go on a run down the stretch that puts them in the top four in the Western Conference. Can they do it? Tune in to find out, and do not miss Sunday's All-Star Game.
