The Dallas Mavericks missed the playoffs entirely, and nobody was more upset than Luka Doncic. The 24-year-old was an All-Star and first-team All-NBA selection for the fourth consecutive season, but his team lost 18 of their final 25 regular season games to finish with the tenth-worst record in the NBA. Doncic cannot do it alone. The Mavericks must improve his supporting cast, but number 77 still has room to grow too.
Luka’s former teammate Spencer Dinwiddie recently offered the superstar advice where he noted that Doncic needs to get in that next level shape to lead his team to a championship. Number 77 was second in the league in scoring, so saying he is not in shape isn’t fair, but there is another level that Luka could reach.
Doncic appears to be striving for it after a video was posted on Instagram of him doing stairs to close out his workouts for the week. Luka already looks to be improving his conditioning, and that should scare plenty of people in the NBA.
Luka Doncic's offseason training video should scare the rest of the NBA
The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor quickly offered up this thought about the video.
Luka Doncic is already an unstoppable offensive force, but he carries such a heavy burden that he wears down or rests at times. The 24-year-old superstar takes defensive possessions off or is just gassed in the final moments. Doncic can still hit those clutch daggers, but he is running on fumes while doing it.
Now imagine Luka with more energy. He has reportedly hired a nutritionist and the video shows him focusing strictly on his conditioning. Doncic knows he must improve if he wants to avoid missing the playoffs again, and it appears number 77 is committed to doing just that.
That should be scary to the rest of the NBA. Luka was the best first-quarter scorer in the league last season and ranked second in the third quarter. What will teams do when he has the energy to take over in the fourth too? There is no answer to stopping Doncic and this improvement will help him take his game to another level.
Luka Doncic is hungry this offseason. He is not going to let his team falter again. That grit, determination, and focus on improving his game should have the rest of the NBA worried. Doncic could win MVP and take over the league next season. Will he be in the best shape of his life at the start of the 2023-24 season? Stay tuned to find out.
