The arrival of Kyrie Irving has been essential in the Dallas Mavericks' transformation into one of the best teams in the NBA. He is a huge reason the Mavs are primed to repeat their Finals run next year.

After averaging 25.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game last season, Irving looks set to continue being Dallas' second-most valuable player after Luka Doncic.

His ability to create shots and play off of Doncic should help make the squad become even more of an offensive juggernaut in the 2024-25 campaign, especially after key offseason additions.

Mavericks utilize Irving's efficiency in catch-and-shoot situations

While Irving has made his mark in the league as one of its brightest ball wizards ever, he has also proven to be an efficient jump shooter, especially during crunch-time situations.

However, research by NBA University has shown that the eight-time All-Star has one of the best percentages among qualified players in guarded catch-and-shoot shots.

In addition, per NBA.com, he had an effective field-goal percentage (which accounts for the fact that long-distance shots are worth three points) of 63.3 percent in catch-and-shoots.

So, Dallas seems to have another underrated weapon in its hands. By taking advantage of Irving's efficiency as an off-ball player, the team could become more dominant on offense.

That might seem counter-intuitive because the former NBA champion strives in creating shot opportunities for himself and his teammates. Also, the Mavs' addition of Klay Thompson already gives it a stud in the off-ball department.

However, with the rock almost always in Doncic's hands anyway, it would be best for the Mavs to run some plays to get Irving open. Having the former No. 1 pick and presumed fellow starter Thompson setting off-ball screens for one another could have opponents confused about which player to zero in on. It will be interesting to watch how coach Jason Kidd gets creative with a deep offensive arsenal at his disposal.

Of course, Irving will still have time to shine as the lead ball-handler when Kidd staggers his minutes with Doncic. Those possessions should give Irving chances to get hot and catch his rhythm, which makes him unstoppable, as attested to by Damian Lillard.
