The Dallas Mavericks wanted to bring back Jalen Brunson, but they never got the chance. The 6β1 guard was set on joining the New York Knicks from the moment they began opening up cap space. Brunson wanted the chance to be the lead ball-handler in New York where he dreamed of playing as a child.
The Mavs drafted JB in the second round in 2018, and structed his contract so he could become an unrestricted free agent after four years. The 25-year-old blossomed from a rookie second-round pick to the teamβs second-leading scorer. Brunson averaged 21 points per game in the postseason as Dallas reached the Western Conference Finals.
Fans were upset that Brunson decided to leave in free agency, but he got a massive contract from the Knicks to be the lead ball-handler in New York. It was between the two sides, but the Knicks offered the chance at being the top playmaker and to be closer to his family. Brunson showed plenty of love to Dallas and the Mavericks on July 2, and there are clearly no hard feelings on his side.
