20. Jim Spanarkel - 16.5
Jim Spanarkel spent the final four seasons of his five-year NBA career with the Dallas Mavericks, and he had a great start to his short career.
Before entering the NBA, Spanarkel played four years at Duke and budded into a star while he was there. He averaged 17.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.7 steals per game in college while shooting 52.7 percent from the field. Spanarkel was an absolute monster while he was at Duke, but his dominance didn't necessarily translate to the NBA.
In his first season with the Mavs, Spanarkel averaged 14.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 46.7 percent from the field. Spanarkel played in all 82 games this season, and he solidified himself as a key piece of the rotation. His 14.4 points per game in the 19801-81 season led the team, and he showed plenty of promise during his first year with the team.
After his impressive first year in Dallas, Spanarkel played three more seasons with the team before retiring after the 1983-84 season due to a broken right wrist.
After his playing career ended, Spanarkel remained involved with the game and is now an analyst for CBS. He is better known for his work as an analyst over his play on the floor, but Duke fans know that he was the real deal.
