1. J.J. Barea - 2018 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship

For those who don't know, the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award is presented by the Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA). The award goes to a player, coach or athletic trainer who shows outstanding service and dedication to the community.

The Mavs have only had one player in franchise history to ever win the award, and that is fan favorite J.J. Barea when he won the award in 2018, and it couldn't have went to a better Maverick.

Prior to the 2017-18 season, Puerto Rico was struck when Hurricane Maria hit in September 2017. Some might forget that Barea was born and raised in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. When the hurricane hit, Barea would put basketball second. Both of Barea's parents and other family members were impacted by the storm.

In the days that followed, Barea would make five trips to Puerto Rico, and worked with partners in North Texas to help deliver food, water, medical supplies, clothes, and more.

Barea would raise nearly $500,000, and would also launch a fundraiser on YouCaring.com that generated nearly $270,000.

Barea was always well-respected by his Maverick teammates, and was viewed as a leader. Whether he was helping out in Puerto Rico, or on the Mavs, Barea will always be loved by the Mavs fans and former players for his hard work and dedication.
