3. Avery Johnson - 2006 Coach of the Year

The Mavericks have only had one coach in franchise history to ever win coach of the year, and that coach was Avery Johnson in 2006.

Johnson first took over as head coach of the Mavs when he was the interim head coach for 18 games in the 2004-05 season. The Mavs would have a 16-2 record with Johnson as head coach and would be the full-time head coach for the 2005-06 season.

Proving he wasn't a fluke as an interim head coach, Johnson led the Mavs to a 60-22 record in the 2005-06 season. It was the second-best record in the entire NBA, but the Mavs had to be the fourth seed in the Western Conference with the San Antonio Spurs winning the Southwest Division.

The Mavs would reach the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history, despite having to face the defending NBA champion Spurs in the second round and having to face league MVP Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference Finals.

Although the Mavs fell in the 2006 NBA Finals against the Miami Heat, Johnson and the Mavs had a lot to be proud of with making the Finals for the first time in franchise history.

Johnson's coaching tenure in Dallas would end following the 2007-08 season, and no Mavericks head coach has ever won Coach of the Year again.
