Trade Dallas Mavericks should already be considering: 4. Get Gordon
The Hornets have been hit hard by injuries to begin the season, and they are just 3-7. Does it push Charlotte into a total rebuild as they look to secure another high-draft pick? They need to get LaMelo Ball more help, and landing a top-five draft pick could be the easiest way to accomplish that feat.
Charlotte is not a free-agent destination, but they also do not want to overpay players. Would it be worth the Mavericks trading their 2027 first-round pick to offload the contracts of Tim Hardaway Jr. and Davis Bertans? It clears the team’s cap sheet a bit and gives the team another capable tertiary ball-handler in Hayward.
Injuries have been an issue for Hayward in recent years, so Dallas should tread lightly here, but they are adding talent and depth. Kelly Oubre Jr. is a significant upgrade over Davis Bertans, and Hayward’s playmaking makes him a better fit next to Luka Doncic than THJ.
The Mavs do not want to give up a first-round pick in any trade, so that likely prevents them from making this deal. If they keep their first-rounders through next summer’s draft, Dallas has a full cupboard, which opens up the possibility of adding a second star next to Doncic.
Do not expect this deal to happen, but it is something the front office should consider, especially if they can convince Charlotte to part with Gordon Hayward for two second-round picks.
