Is trading the 10th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft a mistake for the Dallas Mavericks?
By Tyler Watts
Should the Dallas Mavericks trade the 10th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft?
The answer depends solely on what the Mavs can get in return. They need someone that can immediately slot into their rotation and make an impact. Dallas desperately needs a strong rebounding and rim-protecting center and perimeter defense. Without patching those holes, the Mavs will be back in the lottery in 2024.
Is someone available with the tenth pick that can make an immediate impact in one of those areas? The Mavericks' best bet for acquiring a 3-and-D wing is in the lottery. Every contending team is searching for wing depth, and nobody will be eager to part with it.
Can Dallas trade the tenth pick for a difference-making veteran? That would likely mean some team deciding to rebuild and sell a veteran for a lottery pick. Could the Raptors, Wizards, Bulls, or someone else waive the white flag and decide to go for the number one pick in 2024 over the playoffs?
The immediate pressure to improve will force the Dallas Mavericks' hand. Nobody available at ten will be ready to step in and contribute immediately. It will force the franchise to trade the pick for win-now help to put around Luka Doncic.
The Dallas Mavericks have limited assets, so they must nail every move. Trading the tenth pick will be a key moment for the franchise. Can they improve their roster enough to jump back into contention? Stay tuned to find out.
