The Dallas Mavericks fell victim to the Boston Celtics on Monday night by a score of 119-110, as Dallas simply looked out-matched on all fronts against the Celtics. The Mavericks are presumably doing everything in their power to upgrade ahead of the trade deadline, as their lack of size and physicality has plagued them all season on the defensive end.

This was readily apparent in Dallas’ loss to Boston, as the likes of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum were able to get to their spots at will against Dallas’ defense. Brown and Tatum are extremely physical players on both ends, but they honestly saved Dallas’ defense in a few instances by settling for mid-range jump-shots when given physical mismatches, instead of driving to the rim.

While the game highlighted some of Dallas’ flaws on defense that have been a recurring issue this season, it also highlighted another moment that probably shouldn’t have been highlighted. In the second quarter of the game against Boston, Jaylen Brown crossed over Luka Doncic and made him fall. Brown subsequently hit the jump shot he took afterward, and completed one of the better ankle breakers that we’ve seen in the league this year.

For whatever reason though, the Mavericks technical staff chose to play the video for replay on the American Airlines Center’s new jumbotron. It’s customary for NBA teams to show in-arena replays of highlight plays from the home team, but typically not the road team. Even Jaylen Brown, who crossed over Doncic in the first place, was confused as to why Dallas replayed the play when he was asked in his post-game media availability.

"Here? Nah, I didn't notice that. That’s crazy. Somebody needs to get fired if they did that."

The Mavericks and their technical staff can only move forward and learn from this mistake, but hopefully, we don’t see an error like this from them again, as it isn’t good for player morale to show an embarrassing replay of Doncic in-arena.
