Rumors: Dallas Mavericks plan to re-sign Theo Pinson after Christian Wood trade
By Tyler Watts
The Dallas Mavericks wasted little time in upgrading their roster as they acquired Christian Wood in a surprising trade on June 15. The NBA Finals are still in progress, but that did not stop general manager and president of basketball operations Nico Harrison from swinging a trade for a starting center.
Dallas parted with their 2022 first-round pick, Boban Marjanovic, Trey Burke, Marquese Chriss, and Sterling Brown to land Wood. The Rockets now have three first-round picks in the draft on June 23 as the Mavericks freed up some roster space heading into the offseason.
Dallas has 11 players under contract once the trade gets completed next week. The Mavs are unable to finalize the deal now because of the Stepien Rule, so it will not be done until after the draft. They will be looking to further upgrade their roster, but the front office plans to give one of those open spots to a key piece from their run to the conference finals.
Rumors: Dallas Mavericks plan to re-sign Theo Pinson after Christian Wood trade
The Mavs brought Theo Pinson in on a ten-day contract as the team was dealing with a COVID outbreak, and the 26-year-old stuck, despite Dallas not having an open roster spot. His contributions in the locker room and from the bench were too valuable, so the Mavericks signed him to a two-way contract.
Pinson is ineligible for another two-way deal because he just finished his fourth NBA season. The 6’5 wing will have sign up a spot on their 15-man roster if they bring him back. Marc Stein reported that the Mavericks are expecting to bring Pinson back after they freed up roster space in the Christian Wood trade.
Keeping Theo Pinson as the team’s 15th man is a no-brainer. He can play in a pinch, but his largest contributions will come as a connector in the locker room and hype man on the bench. The Dallas Mavericks won because of their team chemistry, and Pinson was a key piece of that equation.
Expect the Mavs to quickly get a deal done with the 6’5 wing when free agency opens on June 30. Dallas will also be busy trying to further upgrade their roster, so stay tuned to The Smoking Cuban for all the latest.
