The Dallas Mavericks finally tipped off the 2023-24 regular season with an electric win over the San Antonio Spurs. The 126-119 win over the Spurs laid the foundation for how the Mavs want to play for the remainder of the season.

Mavericks newcomer Grant Williams proved why trading a future first-round pick swap was worth it. His 17 points and six rebounds came in handy as the Mavs pulled away late in the game.

Williams’ defense was no slouch either. He drew the assignment of guarding rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama. Williams used his size and strength to contain Wembanyama on the low blocks and prevented Wembenyama from getting any comfortable shots over him. Williams even had the game-sealing block with 17 seconds left in the game.

Rookie center Dereck Lively II made his NBA debut and became the difference maker in his 30 minutes on the court. Lively II amassed sixteen points on an astonishing 87 percent shooting from the field.

The young center dominated every possession with his uncanny rolling ability as he had multiple high-flying dunks including two put-back dunks. His five offensive rebounds were also a team-high. He was constantly pressing the glass and creating second-chance opportunities for the Mavs to score on.

Lively II and Luka Doncic’s pick-and-roll connection looked crisp as they connected on multiple alley-oop attempts. The two have already created an elite pairing just one game in, and fans could visibly see Doncic’s excitement every time he and Lively II connected on a lob.

In the ESPN postgame interview Doncic was even asked a question about how he thought Lively II looked in his debut, Doncic didn’t hold back his excitement and praised the rookie by saying “he played (expletive) amazing.”

Obviously, fans have a lot to be excited about after that thrilling win, especially with Doncic and Lively II's excellent connection.

The Dallas Mavericks will tip off their home opener against the Brooklyn Nets on Friday. This will mark the first time former Mavs Dorian-Finney Smith and Spencer Dinwiddle will be in Dallas since they were traded last season. For more updates and stories on the Mavericks season stay plugged in.
