3 Dallas Mavericks legends who need their number retired immediately
By Will Miller
1. Jason Terry
In his eight seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, Jason "The Jet" Terry easily became one of the most beloved Mavericks players in franchise history. The tip of the iceberg in terms of cementing himself as a Mavericks legend forever of course came in 2011, when Terry was the second leading scorer for the Mavericks throughout the 2011 Playoffs en route to helping the Mavericks win their first and only championship in franchise history.
Terry was the idealistic sixth man at the guard position and he was a microwave scorer and an elite marksman from outside throughout his entire career, as he ranks 10th all-time in 3-pointers made in NBA history. Similar to Finley, Terry was quite the ironman while in Dallas, as he played 74 games or more in every season he was with the Mavericks except for the shortened 2011-12 lockout season.
Terry had a great relationship with Dirk Nowitzki and they developed a solid two-man game between each other while in Dallas together for eight seasons, as Terry was a decent playmaker to go alongside his elite mid-range and 3-point shot creation abilities. Terry was a good point-of-attack defender as well and was very handsy as an on-ball defender, which is extremely impressive when you take into consideration that he was only 6-foot-2.
Terry's clutch shotmaking and unrivaled grit that he displayed in Dallas are already enough to make the case for his jersey being retired by the Mavericks, and he checks all the boxes as far as the statistical realm is concerned as well.
Terry is the only player on this list to win a championship with the Mavericks and played more than long enough with the team to warrant his No. 31 jersey to be retired in Dallas, so hopefully the Mavericks are just waiting a few more seasons to give Terry this honor since he only retired just six seasons ago, as the Mavericks would be doing a huge disservice to Terry if they never retire his number.
