Case for Jalen Brunson signing with Detroit Pistons over Dallas Mavericks

The Pistons were linked to Brunson before the trade deadline, but the two sides could not work out a deal, and their interest has not gone away. Detroit has plenty of cap space, and they are searching for an upgrade in the backcourt to start next to Cade Cunningham.

The Pistons want to take a step forward next season. They have the fifth overall pick in the draft, and the money to add a significant free agent. Cade Cunningham projects to be a superstar, so Detroit wants to reach the postseason as soon as possible to speed up his development.

Brunson would be leaving an established superstar point guard to go play with a developing one. The Mavericks are three years ahead of where Detroit is right now, and there is no guarantee that Cunningham can become a top-five player in the league like Doncic has already.

Jalen Brunson could get more ball-handling and playmaking opportunities next to Cade Cunningham, but he would be leaving the Dallas Mavericks for a team in a worse position to win if he chooses the Pistons. Detroit will have to overpay to land the 25-year-old unrestricted free agent, so expect him to select the Mavericks if the money is equal.
