It's official, the Dallas Mavericks are in the playoffs.
The team clinched a playoff spot Tuesday when they beat the Charlotte Hornets by 26 points. The Mavs clinched the Southwest Division a day later when they defeated the Miami Heat.
A big part of their success the past two days has been the play and performance of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Against the Hornets, both players combined for 57 points, 20 rebounds, and 19 assists. The Dallas duo took their game to the next level against the Heat when they tallied 54 points.
So far this month, both players have been playing out of their minds. Doncic has started April averaging 32 points per game, 10.8 rebounds, and 10 assists. The Mavs' all-star had his best game Tuesday when he dropped 21 points in the first quarter.
Irving on the other hand is shooting lights out this month. He is shooting 41.3 percent from behind the 3-point line in April. Overall, he is knocking down 52.6 percent of his shots. Against the Heat, he shot 62.5 percent from behind the arc, as he was on fire. One thing that has stood out for Irving is his defense. He is averaging 1.7 steals and 1 block over the past six games.
Paul Pierce says the Luka-Kyrie duo is the best scoring duo ever
One person who has taken notice of the duo's performance is Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce. The 10-time all-star spoke highly of Kyrie and Luka when he joined Skip Bayless on Undisputed on FS1.
Pierce said that Doncic and Irving were the best scoring duo ever, and everyone is finally starting to take notice of the duo's greatness.
The thing that Pierce mentioned was the difference between Irving and Doncic. He spoke on Luka's high-scoring ability. Pierce also detailed how Doncic is a top-five MVP candidate and one of the top scorers in the league. This is something the Celtics' star got right. ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith had Luka out of his MVP conversation two weeks ago.
Doncic fits all the intangibles to be described as the best player in the league. He leads the NBA in scoring and is a top triple-double machine. This season, he is shooting lights out. Currently, he has knocked down 38.2 percent of his 3-point attempts. His defense has also improved, averaging 1.4 steals per game.
As for Irving, Pierce detailed his ball-handling skills and championship experience. There's no question Irving is one of the top ball handlers in the league. For example, he does a great job using his dribble moves to get past his defenders and attack the rim.
This is what differentiates Irving and Doncic. Irving can use his skill set to get buckets, while Luka can attack you in various ways. Having both players playing at a high level will be useful come playoff time. Kyrie's playoff experience will be useful for the team, as he can help guide Luka.
Pierce might be onto something. This might be the most the best NBA scoring duo in history. The playoffs will be a test of just how good Luka and Kyrie can be together.
Luka Doncic and Kyrie will look to continue their dominance in the playoffs, as they will face the LA Clippers in the opening round.
