Early Dallas Mavericks 2023 trade deadline prediction: 1. Keep 1st round picks to star chase

The Mavs make two upgrades to their roster without giving up a first-round pick. They owe their 2023 first-rounder to the New York Knicks with a top ten protection from the original Kristaps Porzingis trade back in 2019. Dallas expects that pick to convey to New York in the summer, and that opens up a door for the Mavericks to chase a big fish.

The Mavericks will have all of their own future first-round picks after that draft choice conveys to the New York. Dallas could package multiple picks and swaps to go star hunting in the offseason. Who becomes available? How many picks are the Mavs willing to part with to acquire a marquee target? Time will tell, but it gives the front office the chance to land a second star to pair with Luka Doncic.

The Mavericks cannot solely focus on this season. Their roster is multiple pieces away from championship contention, and they do not have the assets to fill all those holes. Dallas can make a few upgrades while focusing on landing a second star in the summer of 2023. It will be easier said than done, but playing next to Luka should help convince someone to join the Mavs.
