Dallas Mavericks depth chart following Kristaps Porzingis trade
Luka Doncic and Dorian Finney-Smith are likely to be the Mavs top minutes’ getters moving forward with both pushing 35 per game. Jalen Brunson and Reggie Bullock will continue to start as the team goes small. Here is a look at their position groups following the Kristaps Porzingis trade.
Dallas Mavericks guards
Starter: Luka Doncic
Starter: Jalen Brunson
Sixth man: Spencer Dinwiddie
Depth: Trey Burke
Luka, JB, and Dinwiddie will handle nearly all of the team’s minutes in the backcourt when healthy. Head coach Jason Kidd will have two ball-handlers on the floor at all times as they look to improve their offense.
Dallas Mavericks wings
Starter: Dorian Finney-Smith
Starter: Reggie Bullock
Rotation: Josh Green
Rotation: Sterling Brown
Depth: Frank Ntilikina
Injured: Tim Hardaway Jr.
Tim Hardaway Jr. had surgery on his foot and is expected to miss the rest of the regular season. It is a competition for minutes between Green, Brown, and Ntilikina. The second-year wing has passed the other two in the rotation recently and looks to be the favorite for 15-20 minutes per game.
Finney-Smith and Bullock will each play 30-plus and be key to the team’s offense as floor spacers.
Dallas Mavericks big men
Starter: Dwight Powell
Rotation: Maxi Kleber
Third-string: Marquese Chriss
Depth: Davis Bertans
Depth: Boban Marjanovic
The Mavs could opt to play Kleber or Bertans at the four next to Powell and/or Chriss, especially if they match up against a team with size. Expect Kleber to play the most postseason minutes of this group as Dallas attempts to play small ball. They will need to have everyone committed to rebounding as they downsize.
The Dallas Mavericks did improve their depth by trading Kristaps Porzingis, but they took a short-term step backward. They will attempt to build a title contender around Luka Doncic over the next two summers, so expect more changes in the offseason.
