Adjustment for Dallas Mavericks to make in Game 5 vs. Jazz: 1. Get Gobert and Whiteside out of the paint

Utah showed they want to limit wide-open 3-pointers, and they know their preferred drop coverage is not going to work against the Mavericks. Their latest strategy allows Rudy Gobert or even Hassan Whiteside to get switched onto guards and pulled out of the paint. The Jazz struggle to defend on the perimeter, so Dallas needs to take advantage of Utah’s weakness.

Luka Doncic will attempt to get Gobert or Whiteside switched onto him, so his team can feast. Fans know the 23-year-old superstar can absolutely cook in favorable matchups, but going at Gobert may not be the best strategy. In the final minutes of Game 4, Luka got Gobert on a switch before kicking to Jalen Brunson and letting him attack.

Missed shot aside, JB got to the rim without issue, and things would have been more wide open with Maxi Kleber playing instead of Dwight Powell. If Dallas can get Utah’s center defending on the perimeter, there will be plenty of easy buckets to convert in Game 5.

The Dallas Mavericks are hoping to regain their significant edge in 3-pointers attempted on Monday night as they look to go small and keep shooting. They have found their strategy to win this series, but need to do a better job of executing the game plan to advance. Stay tuned to see if they can make it happen.
