Why Ja Morant isn’t on Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic’s level: 2. Future

Morant is six months younger than Luka, despite having one fewer year of NBA experience. He is an incredible player and a bonafide superstar, but Doncic is one of one. He is the alpha among alphas. Morant was ninth in ESPN’s NBArank, but Luka was third.

Both players are 23 years old and have multiple avenues to improve their games. Morant’s 3-point shooting, defense, and free-throw shooting are areas that jump out. Luka is still refining his game too. He wants to improve his defense and add a few new tricks to his bag offensively.

Look no further than the recent GM survey to see which player’s future executives are more excited about. Doncic and Giannis were the only two players to get votes for who they most wanted to build around. Ja Morant was not even mentioned by one of the 30 top executives, and that should take nothing away from the Grizzlies guard. He is a fantastic player and a joy to watch, but Doncic is on pace to go down as one of the 20 best players of all time.

Ja Morant is a more explosive athlete, but that is often a detriment when viewing the long-term prospects of a guard. When his athleticism declines, can Morant still be one of the top players in the league?

Luka has a game built for two decades of dominance as he controls everything on the floor and knows how to get to his spots. Doncic is a bigger version of Chris Paul and akin to LeBron James, who are both still among the league’s elite in their late 30s.

Ja Morant has a bright future, but no player in the league has a brighter one than Luka Doncic.
