8 Veteran coach options the Dallas Mavericks could add to their bench
By Tyler Watts
4. Stephen Silas
The Mavericks had the best offensive rating in the NBA the last time Silas was an assistant coach in Dallas. He spent two seasons with the Mavericks from 2018 to 2020 where the NBA lifer was offensive coordinator. Silas is familiar with Luka Doncic, and he helped the 24-year-old go from Rookie of the Year to first-team All-NBA in his two seasons with the Mavericks.
Silas spent two decades as an assistant coach before finally getting a chance to led a team. He is the son of NBA legend Paul Silas, and Stephen’s coaching resume speaks for itself.
His three years leading the Rockets did not go as planned, but it was also not what Silas signed up for when he took the job. The 49-year-old coached James Harden for eight games before he was traded to Brooklyn. Houston embraced a total rebuild following his departure, which led Silas to win just 59 games over his three seasons in charge.
The Dallas Mavericks should be interested in bringing Stephen Silas back. He has already had success with Luka, and Silas is a strong offensive coach with tons of experience. It could be the perfect fit if head coach Jason Kidd is willing to bring him onto his staff.
