Odds of possible outcomes in Christian Wood extension talks

Will Wood’s stay in Dallas be for just one season or can the team lock him in for multiple years? Do they trade him out of town before the deadline as the Mavericks attempt to avoid losing their second-leading scorer for nothing two years in a row?

There are no concrete answers at this point. What is C-Wood willing to accept to stay in Dallas? If his side is willing to sign a two-year contract, the deal could get done quickly. Will they hold out for a third year? Are the Mavericks willing to budge? Dallas wants to have some cap space in the summer of 2025 to chase a big fish. Is it worth giving Wood an extra year to take away that flexibility?

The odds of an extension have improved given his recent play. The two sides are talking which is positive, so I’d bump the chances of reaching an agreement up to 20 percent. The likelihood of trade sits around 10 percent with Wood finishing the season in Dallas without an extension at 70. He would then become an unrestricted free agent, who is free to sign with any team including the Mavericks. Dallas would have his Bird Rights, so they could exceed the salary cap to sign him to a new deal.
