Can Luka Doncic buck that trend or should the Dallas Mavericks be doing everything they can to find that second star?

Can Luka Doncic buck the historical trend and help the Dallas Mavericks win a title without a second star?

Never doubt Luka. He had the Mavericks in the Western Conference Finals last season, and the 23-year-old is on pace to be one of the greatest of all time, but it has been 18 years since a team has won it all without a second star. Dirk Nowitzki has 26 years old and had never reached the NBA Finals in 2004, which was a long time ago.

The Mavs need to improve the talent around Luka if they want to win their second championship. He immediately made the Mavericks better, which limited their opportunities to build through the draft. The team’s track record in free agency suggests Dallas should be all-in in trading for a second star.

The Mavericks will have to wait until next summer to have a shot. First, the Timberwolves dealing five first-round picks for Rudy Gobert reset the market, and Dallas won't have their first-round picks to trade until their 2023 selection heads to New York from the original Kristaps Porzingis deal. The Mavs need another All-Star that can help them win games when they matter most.
