Free agent Dallas Mavericks should consider for final roster spot: 2. Carmelo Anthony

Anthony was out of the league during the 2018-2019 season as there were some questions about his ability to accept a smaller role. The ten-time All-Star had to transition from superstar to role player, and he did that with the Trail Blazers. Melo still dropped 13 every night and saw his 3-point percent rise up to 38.9 percent over the last three seasons combined as he attempted more catch and shoot tries.

The Mavericks should have plenty of scoring this season. Yes, they lost Jalen Brunson, who averaged 21.0 points per game in the playoffs, but Dallas added Christian Wood and Tim Hardaway will be back from injury. Spencer Dinwiddie is also expected to play a larger role with JB in New York. All three of those players have averaged over 18 points per game for an entire season.

Adding Carmelo gives the Dallas Mavericks another stretch four, who brings a veteran presence. Anthony was just on the NBA’s 75th-anniversary team, but he has never won a championship. Could joining Luka Doncic in Dallas bring the best out of Melo?

If he is willing to accept a 15 to 20-minute-per-game role off the bench, the Mavs could use the depth as they search for the best playoff lineups. Dallas needs another playmaker, and Carmelo could help them solve that problem by giving the team another player who can create his own shots.
