What should Dallas Mavericks do if Jalen Brunson leaves: 2. Improve depth
Head coach Jason Kidd only had six trusted rotation options in their run to the Western Conference, so it will be important for Dallas to improve their depth if Brunson leaves in free agency. The Mavericks already traded for Christian Wood, who is projected to be their starting center.
Adding a 3-and-D wing and Goran Dragic in free agency would give Dallas nine trusted rotation pieces. Luka Doncic, Spencer Dinwiddie, Reggie Bullock, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Wood figures to be the starting five with Tim Hardaway Jr., Maxi Kleber, and the two newcomers playing key roles off the bench.
The Mavericks would love to have ten or 11 trusted rotation pieces. Injuries are bound to happen, and Dallas would love to have a ready-made answer on their roster. Can they add two pieces on veteran minimum deals in free agency? It will depend on how the market shakes out.
The Dallas Mavericks do not need to have all the answers in free agency either. They would be smart to maintain some flexibility to see what becomes available closer to the trade deadline. Fans saw just last year that a shrewd move in February can help take a team to another level.
