2017 NBA Draft: Bam Adebayo (Donovan Mitchell) over Dennis Smith Jr. with the 9th pick

This is one of the picks Dallas Mavericks fans have to think about a lot because, in reality, they could have legitimately selected a star in this draft.

The Mavericks had the ninth pick in the 2017 NBA Draft and selected Dennis Smith Jr. At the time, it wasn’t a terrible pick, as Smith Jr. had some solid potential.

However, disagreements with head coach Rick Carlisle and the drafting of Luka Doncic the following season led to Smith Jr. falling out of favor, as he was traded from Dallas in his second year.

For a few years, it looked like Smith Jr. was going to be a complete bust, but this past year, he found a new home with the Charlotte Hornets, giving them solid minutes.

That being said, the pick was a complete miss by the Mavericks, as just a few selections later, at pick 14, the Miami Heat drafted center Bam Adebayo.

Adebayo has turned into one of the best centers in basketball and is now a two-time All-Star. The 6-foot-9 big man is one of the best defenders in the league.

There’s an argument to be made that the Mavericks should pick up Donovan Mitchell, who was selected 13th overall, in this hypothetical scenario, but based on the rest of the tea, which will be revealed, Adebayo makes a bit more sense.
