2023 NBA Mock Draft: Mavericks land defensive stopper, Warriors add another shooter

5. Detroit Pistons acquire Cam Whitmore
After a 17-65 season and somehow falling four spots in the lottery, the Detroit Pistons are on the clock. They were without Cade Cunningham for 70 games last season, and now they have the chance to add a player to their young core to play with Cunningham and Jaden Ivey.
Cam Whitmore fell right into Detroit's hands, and they can't pass up on him. They have solid guards in Ivey and Cunningham, a young frontcourt in Marvin Bagley III, Jalen Duren, and James Wiseman, and a veteran scorer in Bojan Bogdanovic. The missing piece to that puzzle is Cam Whitmore.
Whitmore is built like a freight train and has crazy bounce. He is a fearless finisher in transition and has the perfect size of an NBA wing. He has the height and size to switch on defense and the strength to body smaller defenders.
He also can guard multiple positions and plays with physicality on this end of the floor. Whitmore thrives as an off-ball defender as he anticipates passes and often makes help-side blocks.
Whitmore looks like he'll fall to the fifth pick, and Detroit has to take him. He would fit perfectly into their young core and will help with their perimeter defense. Star potential is there, and Whitmore, Cunningham, and Ivey are a dynamic big three.
