Should the Dallas Mavericks bring back Dennis Smith Jr. this offseason?

The Mavericks are likely to make a trade in the months ahead. Their roster features five players that are best suited to play center. Dallas needs another playmaker and would love to add more talent. They are not going to head into the 2022 playoffs with their roster maintaining status quo.

If a trade opens up a roster spot, the Dallas Mavericks are still unlikely to add Dennis Smith Jr. The 23-year-old has not shown enough since departing in 2019 to warrant a spot on a team competing for the postseason. If the Mavs are searching for a free agent point guard, they should pick up Dante Exum or Shaquille Harrison before bringing back Dennis Smith Jr.

Dallas’s best bet to make a deep playoff run is trading for another playmaker and ball-handler. Jalen Brunson is going to play an important role too. The Mavericks will not have the minutes and touches for Dennis Smith Jr. if they trade for another talent.

Hopefully, the 23-year-old gets another NBA opportunity and makes the most of it. Smith Jr. still has immense talent. He just needs the right chance to showcase it, and that is not currently with the Mavs.
