Where will Dallas Mavericks free agent Nate Hinton sign?
Hinton went undrafted in 2020 before the Mavs signed him to a two-way contract. The 22-year-old did not get to experience summer league and was thrown almost immediately into his first NBA training camp. The learning curve was steep for all rookies, but even more so for players like Hinton.
He appeared in 21 games with the Mavericks last season but was limited to mop-up duties. Hinton played more than ten minutes in a game just once and saw action in two straight contests just seven times. His lack of consistent minutes makes it difficult to gauge anything from his play.
Hinton did play 12 games during last season’s G League bubble. The Texas Legends did not participate, so the 22-year-old split time between the Long Island Nets and Santa Cruz Warriors. Hinton averaged 10.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 23.0 minutes per game over ten contests with Santa Cruz. He was a strong rebounder in college too.
Prediction: Dallas Mavericks re-sign Nate Hinton for summer league
Hinton will have to prove himself during summer league to earn his place on a two-way contract with the Mavs. The 6’5 wing must play with energy, rebound well, play solid defense, and show improvements in his jumper. If he performs well, expect Nate Hinton to stick around on a two-way deal for the 2021-2022 season.
